In 24 hours I saw 3 Moose, 3 Porcupines, 2 Caribou, 2 Dall sheep, and my first Harlequin ducks. We also saw lots of Ptarmigan & at least one Spruce grouse. I like living here.

The ducks were strikingly gorgeous hanging out on the thawing river.

Great question! I usually verify the identity and name in at least 2 sources. In many cases that would be a book and online. For birds I have The Sibley Guide to Birds by David Allen Sibley. For mammals I like the local library’s A Guide to Wildlife Viewing in Alaska by the Alaska Department of Game and Fish. The research takes some time, but I enjoy it & often learn something interesting. I hope that readers will check me too! I could make a mistake, or (rarely) the blog software swaps photos unexpectedly.
