Wildlife in and near Denali National Park

Bull Moose Growing Antlers

In 24 hours I saw 3 Moose, 3 Porcupines, 2 Caribou, 2 Dall sheep, and my first Harlequin ducks.  We also saw lots of Ptarmigan & at least one Spruce grouse.  I like living here.

The ducks were strikingly gorgeous hanging out on the thawing river.

  1. Where do you get the proper names for all of your wildlife that you have seen?

    1. Great question! I usually verify the identity and name in at least 2 sources. In many cases that would be a book and online. For birds I have The Sibley Guide to Birds by David Allen Sibley. For mammals I like the local library’s A Guide to Wildlife Viewing in Alaska by the Alaska Department of Game and Fish. The research takes some time, but I enjoy it & often learn something interesting. I hope that readers will check me too! I could make a mistake, or (rarely) the blog software swaps photos unexpectedly.
