Aurora in Healy, March 2023

Watson Lake, YT to Fort Nelson,  BC

Day Three,  we have driven 1300 miles so far and have 3100 left.  Today was the Northern Rockies, which is our favorite section of the 4400 mile drive.

Caribou Calf near Summit Lake

I finally saw the caribou calves I was looking for all summer.  We watched 6 caribou near Summit Lake for at least 10 minutes.

Two calves!
A Caribou Bull also

Mineral Lick north of Liard

We had 2 fun stops today – Liard Hot Springs (short hike and long soak, plus moose!) and a short side trip to Mineral Lick, where we saw beautiful scenery but no animals.

Mineral Lick, short hike

Check out last fall’s post for photos of Liard Hot Springs AND a wolverine!  https://roaming-nature.com/2023/09/27/day-7-wolverine/

Wood Bison and Fall Colors
Moose on Liard Hot Springs Boardwalk

Altogether today, we saw 2 Moose, 6 Caribou,  8 Stone Sheep, 8 Mule Deer, and so many  Wood Bison that we didn’t count them.  The colors were gorgeous as well, often at peak.

It was nice to arrive in Fort Nelson well before dark.  We are spending the night at the very nice Woodland Inn and Suites for $105, including breakfast.
