At the end of Day Two, we have driven almost 1000 miles with 3400 to go. This morning, I went for a short walk from our motel to the shores of Kluane Lake. On the other side of the windswept lake, I could see glistening gold patches of trees, plus peaks with new snow.

It was much warmer today, just above freezing when we woke up, and upper 50’s (@14C) in the afternoon. We saw over 60 Dall Sheep in their usual spots on the protected mountainsides this morning. Most views of new snow were in the morning as well. We saw very little snow this afternoon as we continued south.

At Haines Junction we stopped briefly at the joint Da Kų Cultural Center and Kluane Visitor Center. I want to spend longer here our next time we travel through. There are so many intriguing exhibits! Plus, one never knows when someone might have a project underway in the workshop.

We went through some gorgeous areas of peak fall colors, as well as areas that are past peak.

Our longer fun stop for the day was the 0.25 mile hike to Rancheria Falls. The landscape on the hike out to the water was lovely as well.

Tonight we are staying at Dragon’s Den in Watson Lake. Our first choice of lodging is closed for the season. The next two were both full when I called midafternoon. The fourth try was also full, but has this sister property where we got one of the last rooms. The road has been practically empty, so I don’t know why rooms in Watson Lake are at a premium. We are paying $129 USD for a basic, worn room. At least it does seem to be clean – stains throughout, but clean.
