Aurora in Healy, March 2023

Whittier and Cordova, a few highlights

This ten day trip deserves several posts.  We loved both Alaskan towns and definitely want to go back.  However,  packing isn’t leaving me much time to write. With snow arriving in Healy, we want to head south soon!

Whittier, we stayed on the 14th floor
We caught 10 coho in one hour!

On day three, we left Whittier on the M/V Aurora (Alaska Ferry), for a 12 hour boat trip to Cordova via Valdez.

Angel Wings in Cordova

On days four, five, and six we went to the Cordova Fungus Festival.   We also found some time to fish and explore the area each day.

Yellowfoot Chanterelles

On September 15 (day six), we headed east for 21 miles on the Copper River Highway,  staying at a public use cabin for 3 nights.

Early the next morning C caught a huge 11 pound coho.  I had salmon for breakfast,  lunch, and supper on days 7 and 8, plus lunch on day 9.   C ate some as well, and we gave most of one fillet away.

Pond along Copper River Highway

It rained at some point 10 out of 10 days, and much of the time it rained most of the day.  Fortunately we had a clear evening on the 16th.  We drove out the Copper River Highway as far as we could go, seeing beautiful mountains that had been hidden  until now.

Aurora September 16

We went out again later that night to enjoy natures light show.  This was our warmest significant Aurora Borealis viewing, with temperatures in the 40’s.

Lovely Northern Lights
Mountains were pretty too!
Brief break from the rain on day 9

Yesterday was an incredible day with an Aurora viewing from the Alaska Ferry as we left Cordova and the skies cleared.  We had a lovely 7 hour ride to Whittier, then drove to Healy, arriving home by 8 p.m.

Hopefully I will write in more detail about our trip, including many bear sightings,  watching harbor seals successfully hunt salmon, seeing a pod of Orca, and much more.

  1. What a great way to end the 2024 Alaska stay. And the rainbow! Was Charlie looking for the pot of gold at the end of it? Safe travels as you head home! Looking forward to time together again!!
