Sockeye II Part 2 AND Coho Count I

During the latter half of our 6-day “Sockeye II, 2024” I finally caught my first sockeye salmon by flossing.   Three of the four in the photo below are mine.  It was a lot of work and in a crowd, so I am still not a fan of this type of fishing.

July 29 we fished on the Swanson River.  We didn’t catch (or even see) any salmon, but we did catch a LOT of little rainbow trout from our canoe.  I had fun. It was peaceful and pretty and not endless flossing.  There were no other people on the river, but plenty of birds.   C had a good time too, though he would rather be catching big fish.

Our 6th night we splurged on an Airbnb house.  For $152 we had such luxury – 3 sinks each with RUNNING WATER (kitchen and 2 baths), hot shower AND nice bathtub, washer/dryer, dishwasher, queen bed.  Sheer bliss!  (If are curious why I am so thrilled with running water:  https://roaming-nature.com/2024/05/12/dry-cabin-daily-rhythm/ )

In the morning we fished Caswell Creek where C caught and released our first Coho salmon of the season.   He also caught 4 pink salmon and a trout.  I caught one pink salmon and a trout.  Total fish for 6 days, C: 11 sockeye, 4 pink, 1 coho, and 10 trout; M: 1 chum, 3 sockeye, 1 pink, and 14 trout.  We kept 8 sockeye and released the remainder of the fish.

  1. seems like your mini-vacations are filled with water experiences (fishing), but your description of your access to water at the air bnb made me smile!

    1. I hadn’t thought about all the water, lol. Cold river water and cold rain are certainly different than luxurious hot water in a bathtub or sink. Thanks for making ME smile!
