Aurora IV, April 2024

Northern Lights at Midnight

Our third night at our dry cabin in Healy, and we’ve already been blessed with the Aurora Borealis.   It was relatively faint but beautiful!   The dancing northern lights were all around us again – north, south, west, and a bit to the east.

My new cell phone has a night setting on the camera.  Now both C and I can take photos!  With the slow shutter speed, the night setting brings out the colors more than you can see with the naked eye.  The Aurora is the only bit of nature that is more impressive through my camera lens (so many other things are diminished).

Colors straight overhead as well

The next couple nights might be good as long as the clouds stay away.  We better drag ourselves out of bed and take advantage of the opportunity before the days get too long to see anything. Perhaps the Aurora was faint last night as it was fairly light outside between the moon and the long twilight (we were watching the sky as nautical twilight moved into astronomical twilight).  There has been no true night in Healy since April 9 with days rapidly getting longer.

  1. lovely! takes some real motivation to get dressed to go outside in the middle of a cold night to see it! glad your camera is bringing out the colors.

    1. Glad you enjoy the photos – I added these plus a few others to your frame. It is a struggle to get up and out of the house. I’m sure we would be at least on Aurora XII instead of IV if it were easier to get out of the house on a cold night!
