Day Two, Palmer to Valdez

Beautiful day! It was shockingly sunny, barely rained at all. The scenery was gorgeous – snowcapped mountains, sparkling rivers, shimmering waterfalls. We saw various stages of fall color throughout the day, often brilliant yellow, but sometimes all green and sometimes past peak.

We stopped for two glaciers. The Matanuska is a relatively stable glacier that terminates in a valley (it extends 26 miles!) The Worthington Glacier terminates on a slope and has retreated nearly half a mile in the past 150 years.

We saw 4 dall sheep leaping rock to rock just west of Sheep Mountain. Then in Valdez we saw 2 black bears, 2 sea otters, and at least 23 sea lions.

We fished high tide near the fish hatchery. I finally found a form of fishing where I do better than C! I reeled in 6 nasty fish carcasses while he only had 2. Neither of us caught a live fish, though someone in the area got a coho last night.

  1. Melissa I’ve really enjoyed reading about your summer in Alaska. Amazing experiences – many of which I wouldn’t want for myself but it was fun to read about them! — and beautiful scenery. Best wishes as you return to Va. and to resettling. Thanks for posting about your time in Alaska. Sheri

  2. […] While the reds, oranges and mix of colors here are great, the best fall yellows were in Alaska: https://melissarudacille.wordpress.com/2023/09/23/day-two-palmer-to-valdez/ […]
