Dry Cabin Office, Week 12 in Healy

I am working for Shenandoah National Park 16 hours per week until they hire a new Recreational Fees Budget Analyst. Thanks to a cell phone booster & mobile hotspot on my phone I have been able to work remotely since we arrived in Healy.

The lack of running water isn’t a big deal. The only difference is the situational awareness required during a trip to the outhouse. With indoor plumbing I generally continue to think about work during a break. To stay safe, I now need to disconnect from work and look for moose or a bear. In early April I somehow missed a moose stripping bark near the outhouse until I was halfway there.

2 a.m. this morning: no moose, plenty of light

With only 310 square feet in our cabin I have a temporary kitchen table office rather than a dedicated home office as in VA. It isn’t ideal, but it workable, especially with the limited hours I am working.

  1. Dear Melissa:
Welcome to the most common Alaska outback “ off grid “office – the kitchen table and ify WiFI.
Our moose our like out of door dogs else where. Unlikely on a leash and very unpredictable., but just a heck of alot bigger!
It just takes me longer to get stuff done. Some days are better than some! Especially with WiFi.

  2. […] Benefits for me: There have been so many benefits! I have been able to keep in touch with co-worker friends as I transition back and forth from Alaska. Yet I have free time to invest in relationships outside of work (and to write this blog!) In Alaska I worked mornings which gave structure to my day in a new setting. https://roaming-nature.com/2023/06/07/dry-cabin-office-week-12-in-healy/  […]
