Dogsledding, Week 3 in Healy

Wow, today was exceptional. I booked a one hour dogsled tour with Outer Range. https://www.outerrangedogsledtours.com/ Jeff & ten wonderful dogs gave me so much information & showed me a glimpse of an intriguing world. Maybe someday I will do a multi-day trip…

This was money well spent (and I am generally considered a tightwad). In addition to having fun, having a new experience, and learning a lot, I felt like my money and the tour itself contributed to an excellent cause. Many times animal tours are exploitive, but not here. These dogs clearly love what they are doing at the hands of kind & capable mushers who care for them from puppyhood through to old age. I don’t know much about this sport & similar tours, but I highly recommend Outer Range Dog Sled Tours.

Me, with the dogs a bit tired & the brakes firmly set

Possible themes: the dogs, teamwork, channeling individual strengths, mushing – a lifestyle not just a job?, snow trails are complex!, being a tourist in an unfamiliar situation. If there is anything you want me to follow up on in future posts, let me know what intrigues you! I wish I could remember all of the dogs names, but I do remember many roles, responsibilities & personalities.

So much is happening in this photo!

I think my day was even more interesting with the new snow which made finding the trail a challenge. It was sunny today, but they frequently go in the dark by headlamp!

    1. Cool! Any chance you were there so long ago that you got to meet Susan? Love that she won the Iditarod 4 times.

      1. No, Susan was not there when we visited. But Mike had met her during his work. Mike designed & tested a floor machine at her Dad’s company many years ago. Small world!
