Packing to Live in an Alaskan Dry Cabin for 6 months

The cabin we rented is 310 square feet. We wonder, will we wish we brought more (more warm clothes perhaps)? Or will we wish we brought less (where are we going to put clothes – our bedroom closet is 26” wide).

Our current home is a normal 1430 square feet PLUS an unfinished basement. Here we have 8 closets, and only one is narrower than 26”. I am looking forward to the challenge when we get there, but not enjoying making the endless decisions at this end.

The mover took some of our belongings last week. For example, C shipped an ATV with snowplow, a canoe, 4 fishing poles, 3 guns and one compound bow. I shipped 14 books, a bicycle, an empty 30 gallon water barrel, and lots of spices and tea.

Likely coming with us on the 4200 mile drive:

  • 5 more fishing poles (for ice fishing, we hope), but no weapons as we are driving through Canada
  • 2 spare tires for the truck and 2 spares for our 6×10 trailer
  • Layers of warm clothes, as it will almost certainly be -20F (-30C) at times. It could reach 40 below: fun fact -40 is the same temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius
  • A cooler full of venison, thanks to C’s hunting prowess
  • 6 print books

If you are curious why any of these books made the cut, just ask!

  1. Thank you for doing this. I can’t wait to read about it. I want to visit so so badly. What if I bring Martha in the next 3 years?

    1. Thanks for the comment! We would LOVE to have you and Martha visit. You will both enjoy Alaska. Better aim for this summer or next. I doubt we will still be there in 3 years.
