Mind Stretching, Week 13 in Healy

As we begin our 13th week we were woken by a Gray Jay noisily attacking each of our windows. Living in a new environment keeps challenging my mind to let go of what seemed rational. Rivers go down when it is sunny and hot. Birds fly with their feet underneath them. It is dark at…

June Snow and Weather Summary
June 1 we woke up to a dusting of snow. Since mid-March the temperature has ranged from -24F to around 75F, though our max/min thermometer shows higher when it gets in the sun. Toward the end of the post I show max/min reading by month.

Lingonberries, Week 9 in Healy

These tart berries overwinter! They can be eaten after fall frost, dug from the snow, or – in my case – harvested as the snow melts. They are also known as low bush cranberries, and are related to cranberries and blueberries. All around the cabin we have mats of Lingonberries mixed in with Labrador Tea…

Steese Highway

We spent the weekend traveling the Steese Highway, which brings travelers within 50 miles of the Arctic Circle. Be sure to stop at Chatanika Lodge for a meal (likely a great place to spend the night too). Weather, Week 4 in Healy
Woke up to a beautiful day! Camera doesn’t do it justice, such as refusing to pick up Mt. Healy behind these trees with the sun reflecting off its snowy peaks. Cold again, at 8 below as I headed out the door. If it is below zero I wear parka plus ski jacket on top of…

22 Below, Week 3 in Healy

-22 Fahrenheit, -30 Celsius. I have a new insight into the term “Outhouse“. It gets you Out of the House even when it is 20 below! I definitely would have waited for it to warm up a bit if I had indoor plumbing. The Max/Min thermometer outside isn’t working. It will be interesting to see…

Weather, Week 2 in Healy
Temperatures have been mild for the area, but this is the coldest March I have experienced in over 50 years. This morning it was 7F when I got up. Now it is a comfy 33F. Love this $12 max/min thermometer which we put up the day after we arrived. (Amazon link at bottom of post).…
