Washington State

We woke up at the western end of Washington State, and have stopped driving just shy of Spokane, near the eastern border. This morning, we got off the ferry and drove to North Cascades National Park. It was beautiful, though hazy with smoke, and busy. After visiting North Cascades in the morning, the impressive Grand…

MV Columbia, Day 4

After a foggy start where the ferry used its fog horn every few minutes, the day turned gloriously sunny as we were approaching Vancouver Island. We saw so much marine wildlife after it cleared! Today, I saw 3 Orca, 11 Humpback Whales, 27 Sea Otters, 2 small pods of either Dall’s Porpoises or Pacific White-sided…

MV Columbia, Day 3

Shortly after breakfast this morning, we had a 4 hour stop in Ketchikan. Shockingly, it didn’t rain at all during the stop! We saw lots of pink salmon in Ketchikan Creek and watched a seal eat one. My seal photos are so pathetic that I am not posting them. When we headed south again, we…

MV Columbia, Day 2

Today we were onboard the ferry all day except for 1.5 hours onshore in Sitka. While the skies have been heavily overcast, it hasn’t rained all that much since breakfast. At Sitka we toured the Raptor Center. I borrowed the below photo caption from a poster near some bald eagles (“I AM Smiling”). The Raptor…

MV Columbia

We are on the ferry somewhere between Haines and Juneau. We met some interesting people both in the forward observation lounge while looking at scenery and in the cafeteria getting our supper. I had delicious sausage and kale soup while C had a bacon cheesebuger, and our total supper, including sides, was less than $20! Earlier…

Haines, Alaska

We have had jaw-dropping scenery throughout the day as we drove the 215 miles between Destruction Bay and Haines. We also saw over 100 Dall Sheep today, which has to be a daily record for us. We saw 92 sheep at their normal area near Kluane Lake. The group of 20 pictured above were the closest…

Destruction Bay, Fall 2025

We have begun our road trip back to Virginia! We anticipate taking a bit over 2 weeks, arriving in late September. We didn’t take many photos today, so below I added 3 highlights from earlier trips on this section of the Alcan Highway. We didn’t see any bears on this stretch today (September 13, 2025). …

Alaskan Glaciers

Between the Glacier Discovery Train tour and our trip to Cordova, I have been seeing a lot of glaciers lately. Most glaciers on the earth are rapidly melting, and I wonder what these Alaskan Glaciers will look like if I return to them in 10 or 20 years. The photos don’t do any of them…

Belugas, Whittier, and Cordova

Healy was begging us to leave on August 29. It was rainy and cold with “termination dust” snow on all of the peaks around us. Water was rushing across the road as we drove it for the last time. The weather became worse as we drove the Parks Highway through the edge of Denali National…

Healy Cabin, 2 weeks remaining?

We spend almost all of our limited time in Healy sorting and packing. We’re either packing for our next fishing trip (leaving again tomorrow!) or packing to move home to Virginia. In the last 24 hours, we have been distracted occasionally. See the three photos from our upstairs north window taken in the past day. …
