Day Twelve, Watson Lake to Whitehorse

Seven caribou shortly after we started Day 3 of the Alaska Highway. Yesterday was our coldest morning, -9F and it didn’t warm up to over -6F for HOURS. Today it was +5F which was the warmest start in some time. More often than not we need to clear some snow from the truck. We always…

Day Eleven, Fort Nelson to Watson Lake

Day 2 on the Alaska Highway was awesome. We saw 2 moose, began crossing the beautiful Rocky Mountains, and then took a lovely break at Liard River Hot Springs. I loved that there were First Nations people from elders to children also enjoying a soak. They have used the spring for generations. On the walk…

Day Ten, Dawson City to Fort Nelson, BC

Day one on the Alaska Highway (aka “Alcan”, Alaska-Canada Highway). We had driven over 3100 miles to get to “Mile 0”. We ended the day with the first 283 miles under our belt, and ready to cross the Rockies tomorrow. We have a new focus on fuel. Pulling the trailer has us plotting gas stop…

Day Nine, Hinton to Dawson Creek
We have now driven over 3000 miles! Roughly 1800 miles more and we should be in Healy. Highlights of the day were the Grande Cache Visitor Center/Museum and the Bighorn Sheep we saw thanks to the VC center staff. We are now in British Columbia. Tomorrow morning we hope to get some good photos of…

Day Eight, Jasper National Park

Our side trip to Jasper was incredible. The photos don’t do the Park justice, but better than my words! We saw lots of Elk, a group of 6 Bighorn Sheep, a number of Mule Deer, plus endless snow covered mountains. Tomorrow we should reach the beginning of the Alaska “Alcan” Highway. We are nervous about…

Day Seven, Halfway!

Mileage wise we are halfway. Time wise likely a little over a third of the way. The highlight of the day was seeing bison as we drove through Elk Island National Park. We both saw a Plains buffalo. C also saw some Wood bison, which are larger. Plenty of highway signs to watch out for…

Day Six, Estevan, SK to Lloydminster, AB
Saw new critters for the first time on this trip- mule deer, coyote, gray partridge, pronghorn antelope, and possibly a moose which refused to get up for a positive identification. We also saw captive bison and elk. Temperature was 5F when we left this morning, 7F when we arrived at the hotel tonight and saw…

Day Five, Jamestown to Canada!

Visited the National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown, ND before hitting the road. It was 7F and windy, but I bundled up. Thanks for the warm hat R, D, and E! Road had icy patches and blowing snow the first several hours. We saw deer (every day so far), grouse, a bald eagle, and 268 pheasants…

Day Four, WI to Jamestown, ND
It was 12F this morning, but we stayed warm camping in our trailer. On the drive saw pheasants, swan (Tundra or Trumpeter, not sure), a bald eagle, and once again deer! Plus C has added 3 new states to his life list. The forecasted snow held off longer than expected, but when it started it…

Day Three IL to Spring Valley, WI
Truck doors & hood and trailer door were frozen shut this morning, but turned into a beautiful day. We saw deer and windmills (every day so far) and lots of turkeys. Snow on roadsides but not on the road. Three things we saw but no photos: lake with ice fishing huts, cranberry bogs, and a…
