Sandhill Cranes and White-sided Dolphins

Two Pacific White-sided Dolphins Leaping

We are in Kearney, Nebraska,  which would be a great place to visit during the Sandhill Cranes Spring Migration.

Maybe some year we will get here to see (and hear!) thousands of cranes along the Platte River.  Both C and I loved hearing their distinctive calls overhead in Alaska.

I enjoyed watching Sandhill Cranes dance at Creamers Field in Fairbanks back before I considered myself a birder.

Switching gears, Nebraska doesn’t have anything to do with the Pacific White-sided Dolphin.  However,  this seems like a good time to correct an error from my blog post from 4 days ago.   I had misidentified some Pacific White-sided Dolphins as Dall’s Porpoises.

We had occasionally seen Dall’s Porpoises further north, and these Dolphins look so similar that I made a naive assumption.  After C suggested we look into the difference between Dolphins and Porpoises, we realized our mistake.  Oops!

Orca (largest Dolphin!)

The fun bit is that we have definitely seen all of the Alaskan Dolphins and Porpoises this summer.  The 2 Porpoises found in Alaska are the Dall’s Porpoise and Harbour Porpoise.   The 2 Dolphins found in Alaska are the Pacific White-sided Dolphin and the Orca (Killer Whale).  Three days ago, we didn’t know we had seen any dolphins this summer, and now we know we had seen many.
