Aurora in Healy, March 2023

Ninilchik

All 3 of our campgrounds the past week have had great views, but Ninilchik Volcano View RV Resort is the best view yet.  We have spent four nights here on the edge of a bluff.

Campsite 20 at Volcano View CG

Across Cook Inlet is Mt iliamna (left of truck in photo above) and Mt Redoubt (between truck and trailer).  Every day we see sea otters off the beach and moose when we are driving around.

Deep Creek SRA and Cook Inlet

Below us are wetlands with a fascinating and ever changing array of birds (including migrating Long-billed Dowitchers!)  I have been spending a lot of time birding and getting better at using e-bird.  See the end of this post for several checklists if you are interested.

Dowitchers and Green-winged Teal

This area of the Deep Creek State Recreation Area is also home to many bald eagles.

Bald Eagle and Mt Redoubt

The eagles have been providing us with much entertainment. We frequently see acrobatic flight displays such as barrel rolls, hammerhead stalls, violent diving attacks, and other manauvers one might find in a WWII dogfight. The immature eagles appear to be more rambunctious,  but adults are often involved as well.

Easier to get photos when they are on the ground

We tried trout fishing at Johnson Lake, which had recently been stocked. I have discovered that if I am fishing and birding, I don’t take many photos!  So, there are no photos of Johnson Lake, but I do have a bird list below 🙂

C has been surf fishing.

Today he got shark, sole, and cod.  He saw someone land a small halibut (9 pounds) but hasn’t caught one himself yet.

Transfiguration of Our Lord Church, Ninilchik

We are about to head south to Homer for 3 nights.  Then on Sunday we will begin the 9-hour drive north to return to our cabin in Healy.

Here are some of my birding checklists for May 12 and 13:
