Puffins, Otters and Volcanoes

Our third day of the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival we took one of the festival boat trips.  The boat enabled us to cover more of the bay than our kayak trip the previous day.

Day 2, Tandem Kayak
Day 3, blue skies again!

We saw so many birds and otters!  Plus, my arms were able to recover from kayaking.  I’m glad we did both trips from Homer Spit as they each had their own advantages.

Sea Otters in Kachemak Bay

The highlights of the otters was seeing a mother otter and pup resting on shore, and seeing a large group of mothers with their pups in the water.

Sea Otter Mama and Pup

Rainbow Tours did a great job of finding birds for us.  Below are just a few of the highlights.

Little Feet Launching Puffin
Black Oystercatchers
Many Surfbirds!
Red-necked Phalarope
Tufted Puffins, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Gull
Another Sea Otter Mama and Pup

That evening, we moved our camp from Homer to Anchor River State Recreation Area as I was scheduled for a morning bird walk there on the final day of the festival.

Mt Augustine and Venison Burgers (Halibut Campground)

Halibut Campground is practically on the beach, where we had an excellent view of 3 volcanoes across Cook Inlet. Redoubt and Iliamna, pictured below, are in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve.

Mt Iliamna (L) and Mt Redoubt (R)

We were fortunate that the campground was open and that we managed to get the last site!  It was nice to enjoy a sunset walk at low tide after supper.

Greater White-fronted Geese

I had an excellent time birding on Sunday morning.  I learned so much and saw cool birds such as Hudsonian Godwit, Whimbrel, Black-bellied Plover, and Surf Scoters.  I also (finally) started experimenting with e-bird.  Here is my bird list for that morning https://ebird.org/checklist/S236657801
