We are 300 miles closer to Alaska. We also had 3 fun stops and one oil change stop.

Montana has some great interstate rest areas which include trails. I enjoyed a nice stroll on the Copperway Regional Trail, which had views of the distant 585-foot copper smelting stack (higher than the Washington Monument). It was constructed between 1900 and 1918 with peak copper production during WWII.

We also stopped at the nearby Warm Springs Wildlife Managment Area, where we saw lots of cool birds. We mostly saw waterfowl but also saw some gray partridge.

Further west we detoured to the Ninemile Historic Ranger Station. C took a crosscut saw sharpening training here many years ago.

Coincidentally, the forest service was holding the same training this week! The instructor plus saws in their sharpening vises were there when we stopped in and chatted a bit at the end of their work day.
