Days 4 and 5 brought us to 2300 miles completed with 2100 miles remaining. We saw 2 bison, 1 coyote, and lots of elk and deer.

Over the past two days the terrain has changed from hilly forests to farmed plains. The photo below catches some of each during the transition zone. Fall colors are generally pre-peak.

We have now driven the entire Alcan Highway (aka Alaska Highway) 4 times in 2 years. We also drove a good chunk of the Alcan in our car in 2022, but the truck doesn’t get credit for that.

Our fun stop of the day was looking for Richardson’s Ground Squirrels at Vermilion Provincal Park and hoping they weren’t hibernating yet. We had great luck seeing them, but struggled to get good photos before they scurried into their burrows.

The ground squirrels we saw were probably all juveniles. The Richardson’s Ground Squirrels have an interesting hibernation schedule. One of their nicknames is Flickertail, which is an obvious moniker after watching them!

The migrating flocks keep growing in size as we migrate southeast into Saskatchewan . Today we have seen some gigantic flocks of Snow Geese, as we did last year. https://roaming-nature.com/2023/09/30/day-10-whitecourt-ab-to-north-battleford-sk/
