21 Caribou and a Baby Dall Sheep

We decided to let the weather determine what we would do Sunday afternoon.   It wasn’t quite warm enough for fishing on chilly, windy Otto Lake.  Therefore, we took our last opportunity this spring to drive out to the Teklanika Rest Area and had another phenomenal day viewing wildlife.

Despite (or because?) of the many other visitors doing the same thing, we saw 4 of the big 5.  I don’t think we would have seen the bear if others hadn’t seen it first.  We passed the blessing along, helping many other people see the bear and other animals.

Caribou and Mountains

We saw 21 caribou (breaking our record from just a few days ago) but still haven’t seen a baby bou.  Supposedly caribou do not hide their babies like white-tail deer do. Whenever we saw a cow caribou nearby we watched for a while,  hoping to see a calf.

We saw 38 significant mammals:  12 Dall Sheep, 2 Moose, 1 Grizzly Bear, and 2 Porcupine (plus the 21 Caribou of course).

Dall Sheep Mom and Baby

Closer to home, we have seen a baby Dall Sheep twice in the past several days.  He is so cute!
