Alaska in June

If you love moose calves, June is a great month to visit Alaska. Spend several days visiting Denali National Park in June and you are almost guaranteed to see moose calves with their mothers. Moose Calves and Wildflowers

In Interior Alaska snow will be gone from the roads and lower elevations, but there will still be many snow-capped peaks. It is a beautiful time of year! Warning though, the mosquitoes can be fierce. If you are willing to travel, you should be able to find a place with relatively few insects. But if you have your heart set on a particular area, be prepared. We find bug shirts and mosquito tennis racket zappers critical in certain situations.

Throughout June you will have lots of options for tours, lodging and meals. However, there are also lots of other tourists, so you may want reservations if you have your heart set on a particular venue. We did not have any luck fishing in June despite multiple attempts. However I greatly enjoyed the scenery, wildlife, wildflowers, and foraging.

Caribou and snow capped peaks

The days are VERY long! As you head north, it will never be truly dark. If you get all of the way north of the arctic circle, it will not only be light, but the sun will be completely above the horizon. Check out this post for June “sunset” photos both in the arctic and in Healy: https://roaming-nature.com/2023/06/22/utqiagvik-part-3-midnight-sun/ . I suggest a sleeping mask to help convince your body that it is time to sleep. The intense daylight is sneaky about getting around blackout curtains.

“Alaska in July” will be my final in this series of 6 months. When I started writing, I thought if I were visiting Alaska without fishing, July would be the month that I would pick. Though now that I reminisced on June, I’m not so sure. We are so lucky that we will be living in Alaska April into September again this year and we don’t have to pick just one month. Though it’s not all bliss so don’t get jealous! The lack of running water at the cabin we rent is challenging and while I want to return, I’m not looking forward to that bit.
