If you visit the far north in April you have a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Aurora II, Week 4 in Healy – Me & C (roaming-nature.com) The temperature in interior Alaska will be cold, but the bright sun is lovely when it isn’t snowing. Days are longer and brighter than in September with 15 hours of daylight in Healy mid-April and close to 17 hours by the end of the month!

It is still off season with few options for lodging or food in the Healy area. Dog sledding is an awesome tour option if snow conditions are good. If that is your priority you’ll have a better chance at good conditions in early April, or consider an earlier, colder month. I doubt April will ever be a top month for visiting Alaska, but for a few it might be their perfect month. If you are in Fairbanks late in the month have even a tiny interest in birds, be sure to go to Creamer’s Field to see the spring migration of Sandhill Cranes and other birds.
