Alaska in September

A number of people have asked about a good time to visit Alaska. I am guessing July will be my winner, but I will consider one month at a time. Since most of the folks asking live in Virginia, this week is a good time to post about September.

The recent weather here in VA reminds me of September in Interior and South Central Alaska:  short days*, frequent showers, overcast skies, and a similar temperature range. September 1 though 21 in Healy the average temperature was around 45F. We recorded a low of 30F and may have had a high of 69 (or sun hit the thermometer). We had ice some mornings and on the 21st it was snowing, but not sticking except at elevation.

If this weather appeals to you, consider a September visit as it has some advantages over the more popular months. For one, the fall colors are spectacular!

Silver and Chum Salmon are still running in September, especially early in the month. You can go fishing, watch spawning salmon, and if you are lucky, watch bears fishing. Also, male moose and caribou have grown out their impressive antlers.

Supper!

September is the shoulder season so some prices are lower and there are fewer tourists.  If you come after Labor Day, tourist attractions will be closing.  Towards the end of the month around Denali most restaurants,  hotels, campgrounds and tours will be shut down. There is still plenty to do for the independent traveler who is OK with limited lodging and meal selection.
