Day 10, Whitecourt, AB to North Battleford, SK

Today we C saw a moose before we even reached the fenced Elk Island National Park. At the north gate of the park we saw a coyote before reaching the entrance station.

American White Pelican and fall color

I took a short hike at Astotin Lake, where I saw a swimming beaver, a feeding pelican, and other waterfowl that I wished I could identify. On our ten mile drive south to exit the park road we saw a bison at close range. Then from the Yellowhead Highway we saw more bison far away.

Our highlight of the day was an immense flock of snow geese, both white morph and blue morph. While primarily thousands of snow geese, there were some other birds mixed in such as shorter necked Ross’s geese. There were also a few cackling geese and/or the similar Canadian geese, plus some dark ducks or geese that I couldn’t identify. Hopefully C uploads his video to Facebook. The flock was in wheatfield stubble hours east of the park.

Between the fall colors, pleasant temperatures, and the migrating birds, I like traveling this time of year! Tonight we are staying at the reasonable Lonestar Hotel in North Battleford, Saskatchewan where we would stay again.
