Coho Count II

C and I caught 12 coho salmon over a 9 day outing.  I caught 2 coho (both on the last day!). C caught 10 coho, releasing 2.  It rained 7 of 9 days, sometimes raining very hard.  Those 2 days without rain were marvelous!

August 22 – half day of fishing at Sheep Creek Slough.   I caught and released 2 chum salmon.  C kept one beautiful, bright coho which we had for supper.   He also caught and released 2 additional blush coho and one chum.  Our friends caught and released at least one chum each.

August 23 – C caught and released 4 chum salmon in Sheep Creek Slough.  our friends caught chum as well. Then we tried Willow Creek which was really low.  The only one having any luck fishing was a scraggly, immature bald eagle.  He glided down from a tree top, extended his talons once near the water, came up with a fish and took it to the bank to eat it.  About 20 minutes later he flew back to his tree.

August 24 – we awoke at 4:30 a.m. to drive to Seward for a noon fishing charter out of beautiful Resurrection Bay.  We had a rainy, windy, and choppy boat trip beyond Fox Island.  A caught a rockfish and the other 3 of us caught nothing.

Murre (also saw puffins while fishing)

August 25 – C joined his friends on an early morning fishing charter.  He caught and kept one pink and 3 coho, all very fresh. A caught 4 coho. I enjoyed a visit to the Alaska Sealife Center.

August 26 – relaxing day in Seward with minimal fishing.

August 27 – On our last day in Seward I fished a little and didn’t catch anything.   C fished occasionally, catching and releasing 4 pink salmon and one mystery fish.

August 28 – We moved to the Swanson River where C caught 2 coho and some trout.  I fed salmon eggs to a lot of little trout and caught one. We also watched 2 otters, a mama and her half grown pup. It was raining too hard for photos.

August 29 –  A moose kept us from getting in the river for awhile.  She checked out C and our boat, then brought her twins down to cross the river, getting out by the boat ramp and walking up the road.  We kept retreating, eventually ending up at our truck as the family passed nearby.  Once we launched, it was buggy when it wasn’t raining hard enough to keep the insects away. C caught 2 coho and some trout. I caught 2 coho as well.

Last day of fishing this trip

August 30 – we drove back to Healy without fishing, but did get the oil changed in the truck,  ready for our next trip.

  1. congratulations on the fishing! and the Bald Eagle fishing! When we were on the Kenai river with Clyde and Donna, a Bald Eagle flew down and caught a fish and took off with it. Clyde said in all his years on the river, that was only the 3rd time he had seen that. We are sure, but think the fish might have been one that we caught and Clyde had released. Was pretty neat! Don’t have any moose stories though!

    1. Glad you were able to see a Bald Eagle successfully fishing as well. They are impressive birds!
