Russian River and Cooper Creek

Russian River

It has been rainy and C got an extra day off so going further afield to fish for sockeye this weekend.  Very few mosquitoes or potholes so far!  We drove an extra  100 miles to the Kenai Peninsula.  With the good roads it wasn’t that much extra driving time compared to last week.

During the fish runs the Russian River has lots of bears and gulls.  Fortunately we only saw the latter so far.  In the parking lot we talked to a fellow who had seen 5 bears on the same stretch, some black bear and some grizzlies.  Not sure why the mosquitoes aren’t so thick, but hope that holds.

Early Run Sockeye on Russian River

We fished from 8:30 until midnight and I didn’t catch a fish.  C fished much harder than I did and got a nice sockeye.   Fresh red salmon for supper tonight.

Russian River Campground was full, but Cooper Creek is just a few miles away and had spaces available on a Thursday night.  The campground is very clean and we saw a moose nearby.  We are near the manual water pump which tickles me every time I see it.

Hopefully today we get a couple more. Limit is 9 per day, no more than 18 in the cooler. We don’t need that many!
